Cystitis
a case study & holistic protocol for Cystitis.
K.L. is complaining about frequent burning painful urination and pain in her lower abdomen, she has recently visited her primary care doctor who confirmed that she has cystitis. K.L. would like to use complimentary alternative medicine to support her symptoms. I start by asking her a few questions, such as when her symptoms started, has she had a fever, how much water she is drinking, her current diet, and where she feels the pain exactly. It’s important to note that most cases of cystitis are benign, however, they can become chronic or develop into bladder or kidney infections (Murray, 2012). If symptoms are severe, such as fever, nausea, vomiting, or if low back pain is present then it’s important to refer K.L. to a doctor as soon as possible.
There are many holistic protocols that can be used to support cystitis recovery. To start I recommend light exercise such as walking or yoga to increase blood flow and oxygen to the pelvic area and also strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. I also suggest eating a healthy and balanced diet that incorporates whole organic fruits and vegetables, wild lean proteins, and eliminating simple sugars and refined carbohydrates (Petersen, 2023). I recommend a 24-hour fast where K.L. only has watermelon juice, some cranberry juice, lots of spring water, and/or a mixture of cucumber, carrot, beet, and garlic juice, in which all juices are fresh and organic. As far as supplements are concerned, I recommend a high dose of B vitamins, 10,000-15,000 milligrams of vitamin c, 50,000 IU of vitamin A, daily for 5 days, and 500 IU vitamin E daily (Petersen, 2023). These supplements plus the nutritional and lifestyle changes will support the urinary tract, aid in recovery and strengthening, help fight infection and maintain proper liver functioning while flushing out the body. The nutritional and lifestyles changes will also help in preventing future occurrences and improve the overall health and wellbeing of K.L. I will follow up with K.L. in 2 weeks.
